When the car is cold, about 75% of the time when I press the gas, it stalls, if I let go of the pedal right away, the car recovers. Also when I shift into drive then the car stalls. For the most part the car will idle fine, however once I saw it stall.

If I let the car warm up to normal operating temperature, only 25% of the time when I hit the gas does the car stall. I am always able to shift into drive without stalling.
We just replaced the Mass Airflow Sensor as it was really dirty and malfuntioning.

My parents claimed it backfired once.

Dirty fuel injectors (cleaning the injectors often fixes this).
Bad MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor
Bad TPS (throttle position) sensor
Bad or dirty MAF (mass airflow) sensor
Low fuel pressure (leaky fuel pressure regulator or weak fuel pump)
Vacuum leaks (intake manifold, vacuum hoses, throttle body, EGR valve)
Bad gasoline (fuel contaminated with water or too much alcohol)
