I recently purchased a 2004 Chevy Cavalier. After a few days, the check engine light came on. I then discovered that the gas cap was missing. I replaced that and the check engine light went off. Now I am noticing a faint odor of gasoline when I start the call and when I am idling, e.G. At a light. The odor dimishes when the car gets back up to speed. What could be causing this, is it dangerous and do you think the dealership purposely left the cap off to camouflage the odor?

Hello, any fuel smell, leak needs to be checked. It is a good way to catch fire. This sounds like a leaking fuel injector. With a strong light look around the fuel injectors really good for any wet areas or indication that fuel has been leaking. Start the car and again look at it really good for a leak.

The cap is different than this.

Let us know.
