1996 Chevy Cavalier
----------------------------------------------------------------
Three days ago I was driving when my motor started to tap I thought I blew a rod but drove the car over 30 miles home without incident. Yesterday I changed the oil and added a qt of STP but this did not stop the tapping/rapping noise.

Last night driving up hill I heard a bang and what sounded like metal pieces shooting out from under the car I lost all power and the engine shut down, all it will do not when I turn over the key os go "click" I was told it is most likely the timing chain what do you think?

The timing chain is a possibility, it kind of sounds like you blew out the bottom end of the motor. It's hard to say what is really going on, but either way, to get it fixed, it will probably be pretty costly. Did you get smoke or anything out of the back of it when you heard the bang and lost power?
