Engine Cooling problem
2001 Chevy Camaro 6 cyl 88000 miles
----------------------------------------------------------------
Okay so lets get this out of the way....I'm a female who honestly knows jack about cars so any and all help that I can get would be appreciated. While driving my camaro on the freeway I heard a clacking noise and noticed that the car was overheating so I pulled off of the freeway and into a gas station where the car shut off. I had it towed and now the mechanic that took a look at it told me that two of my heads are punctured. Now I'm not sure if that means that the head gaskets are messed up or the heads themselves(they are different, right?). He said it would be $600 to just open the engine to see what was wrong. I'm not sure if it would cost me more to get this engine fixed or just to buy a restored engine. What are all the possibilities that I could consider in regards to what is wrong and how to fix my camaro? Please ANY honest advice would help. Thanks

To start off with, I have never heard a Technician refer to anything with the heads as being punctured, change mechanic's to start with. I he means blown head gaskets that may also include milling the heads which may have becomed warped and check for cracks. do not let them sell you a valve job or anything else because they will try. The clacking sounds like the valves train when the engine is getting hot, if it was a loud knocking sound then you may have done some damage to the lower end of the engine, in which case you would want to replace the engine.
