Most of the time when I have came across this problem its not the shift motor or the switch that is the problem (Although I'm not completely ruling them out). Usually the problem is either a short in the wiring harness near the T-case if you hit a rock or a tree branch. Or one of the speed sensors on the T-case is bad. Or it can even just be some moisture in the connection.
