1960 Chevy Bel Air

this car is acaully a 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air, my huband is working on it, it will start and run great in park, but when you put it in drive, and push on the gas it dies, we have changed the fuel pump, rebuilted the carb, take air and blow out the fuel lines, replaced the fuel filters, and still the same thing, this car have a 236 enging in it, is there anything eles that could be making this car act this way

It could be that with today's fuel the rebuild kit may have had a leather accelerator pump in the carb. When these were used originally you had to soak them in fuel for them to work right. You may just take the air cleaner off and with the engine shut off look in the carb and push the gas pedal. If you don't see fuel squirt out into the carb then you'll need an accelerator pump with a viton pump. Also if the float is that old you may need to take it back out of the carb and put it in gas and see if it still floats. If it doesn't it will never keep a correct fuel level in the bowl like it should. One other thing if it is a plastic/composite float todays fuel may have ate the center out as well. Other things to check would be dwell angle(point gap) timing and whether or not the vacuum advance is working or not.
