2003 Chevy Avalanche oil pressure

My oil pressure has shot up to 80 recently and the engine light has come on. Changing the oil (10/30) didn't help, the light went out for a day and came back on. What causes the oil pressure to go up? Is it something I can try to handle myself or is this a certified mechanic job?

Hi:
To me it sounds like an oil sending unit problem. You can check the pressure with a gauge or have someone do it for you. All you do is remove the sending unit and replace it with the gauge itself. By the way, what engine code was set in the computer?
