Fires right up, step on gas, has nice power, but as I go, the power isn't there anymore and it stays kind of monotone throughout all the gears slowly. If I step on it it doesn't go faster it just slowly speeds up. And then after 45 MPH if I step down more I can hear clattering like an old truck does when it overheats. But it's not overheating.
if I cruise, it's fine, but when I try to get ahead of traffic I can hear it clicking like the lifters making noise (check engine light comes on). It's only after a certain speed it does this, but I can cruise all day everywhere. The power is just not there. And when I restart engine light is gone.

Hi,

What you described sounds like a plugged catalytic converter. Do me a favor. Take a look through this link and let me know if it seems to mirror what you experience:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/bad-catalytic-converter-symptoms

Also, I need you to check for diagnostic trouble codes. This truck has an OBD1 system and doesn't require a scanner to get codes. All you need is a short jumper wire or even a paper clip will work. Follow the directions in the following link:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/buick-cadillac-chevy-gmc-oldsmobile-pontiac-gm-1983-1995-obd1-code-definitions-and-retrieval-method

Do that and let me know what codes are retrieved. Also, let me know if the catalytic converter symptoms seem to mirror what you experience.

Take care,

Joe
