Check Engine and AT light came on. Pulled code P0771. Due to age and mileage, I decided to change the entire Shift Solenoid Block. Drained, dropped pan, removed block, installed new one, ensured all connectors were in proper spot. Refilled, reconnected battery and the car started. However, it would not shift into any gear. Once I turned the car off it would then not restart. It was if the car thought it was still in a gear so it wouldn't even attempt to crank.

One note, the two valve springs and casing in the image both popped out. I wasn't certain which one went in each slot. They looked identical but I noticed the part number in the image is different for each spring.

Would this have caused the issue I'm facing?

The trouble code P0771 for your 2006 Mazda 5 indicates a problem with the transmission fluid pressure control solenoid "B." but it sounds like the gear range sensor is not working. If you put the car in reverse do the reverse lights, come on? If not, I would make sure the electrical connector is on all the way, here is the location of the sensor so you can check it out and how to replace the TR switch. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.

Hi.

Thank you so much for the reply. Unfortunately, I cannot put it into reverse. I can use some small force and get the gear shift into the reverse setting, but it doesn't go into gear at all. It doesn't want to shift like normal.

It sounds like the valve body got messed up, did you get the check balls in the right places, also did the transmission go into reverse before you started?

Before I changed anything the car would go in reverse just fine. It would shift into all gears but would shudder a bit going to 3rd and 4th and rev higher than normal at first. That's when the AT and CEL came on and the P0771 code spit out.

I didn't touch the balls. The valve/pressure springs did come down. (Circled in the attached picture). It is possible I got them reversed in reinstallation. I am not sure if that would cause the issue I'm having, but a local mechanic suggested I reverse them and see if it does the trick.

Yep, that is a good plan of action, let me know if that fixes it.

Hi. Good news and bad news. Good news is I got the springs switched. Got it all put back together and filled up with ATF.

Bad news, as I was cleaning up before testing the car, I noticed this little piece was on the ground (picture). I'm a little unsure what it is but I'll likely need to take it apart again and find where it goes. Any thoughts?

It looks like that belongs in the valve body? I am not sure what that is. Does the transmission work now?

I've not tried to start the car back up since I found that piece. Not certain it works. I'm fairly certain it belongs in the valve body. Maybe some type of parking rod/valve.
I'm going to take it back down this weekend and see if I can isolate where it belongs.

I believe the initial issue is resolved as the springs have some compression to them now when I swapped them out. But I'll let you know for certain.
