This could be a couple things. The most likely cause of this is the torque converter lock up solenoid is keeping the converter engaged and as soon as you put it in gear, the engine stalls. This is just like letting the clutch out of a manual transmission with it in gear. It will just stall and that is what happens with the torque converter.
The only other possible causes of this are mass air flow sensor issues or other engine load sensors. So we need to scan for codes and find out if there is anything telling us that this could be the issue. Here is a guide that will help with this:
