First, if the check engine light is on, you really need to have it scanned to identify diagnostic trouble codes. They will point us in the right direction. Here is a quick video showing how it is done:

I realize most people don't own a scanner, but most parts stores will do it for free or lend/rent you a scanner. So that needs done.
Next, does the engine always start right back up or are there times you have to wait for it to cool off?
