Now the starter motor does not crank but there is a whine when I turn the key to the start position, sounds like starter motor is turning. I have put the battery on charge and the motor is now turning a bit faster after about two hours charge but still not cranking the engine. The battery is about seven years old.

Hi Ken. Thanks for your reply. I have managed to get the car to start by jumping it so next move is to change the battery. Thanks for your help.

While driving as normal the car runs fine, when going down a hill and nearing the bottom of the hill say coming to junction as the engine revs become less the engine will cut out as it will if stood at traffic lights for more than about thirty seconds or so the engine just stops running. I have taken the car to my local garage and they have checked the vacuum system as they thought that the likely cause, when the car is idling the engine becomes very lumpy then it will run smoothly again briefly then stop.

Try cleaning your throttle plate on both sides with choke cleaner and IAC hole if you have one. Then check fuel pressure.

The car shut off on me the other day and it would crank back up but would not stay cranked. Now the car is cranking back up and still running. No warning lights are on nor service engine lights. Can you tell me what might be the problem or why it did that or should I be trying to have something check?

Check fuel pressure. Make sure it is within the manufacturer's specs.
