Hi, replaced the timing belt on the car listed above, and the car now stalls on idle and chokes off when hitting accelerator. Verified all timing marks are correctly aligned, replaced mass air flow sensor, cleaned EGR, tested compression and fuel pressure. Any thoughts? At a loss, thanks!

(Original codes: PO171, P0455, no longer present since initial diagnostic).

what was fuel pressure when you checked it. should be 41-46 psi key on only if not that may be the problem as you had a 171 code. also the 455 code is a massive evaporator canister leak so that should be smoke tested to find it or lines were hooked up wrong. also, check for air leaks like from air cleaner to throttle body.

Fuel pressure is key on, engine off: 0 psi, with car running, 39 psi.

recheck the massive evap leak that can cause it as well as it may be a vacuum line disconnected and re scan for codes and if any get back to us.

No codes, vacuum line connect correctly. This car is driving me nuts!
Checking for massive evap leak, need to grab the equipment and get back to the vehicle.

the only thing I can think of is that engine was not turned over two revolutions and timing tension-er has knocked it out of align. also crank sensor is supposed to be check for gap .020-.059" as that may cause the problem otherwise i will have to pass this on.

Hello there,

It really sounds like to me that the timing belt is off one tooth. These can be difficult becasue sometimes the marks don't line exactly.

https://www.2carpros.com/diagrams/mazda/protege/1999

Here is a guide that will show you where the marks should be, if possible send a picture of the marks lined up on TDC

Sorry you about taking it back apart but we have had to do that many times at the shop.

Please let us know what happens.

Cheers, Ken

have you checked the ignition timing on this beast? shold be 9-11 btdc. he only other thing I can think of is to hook a scanner up and freeze frame it when this happens. then read sensors and see If something shows up.

Ok, will do.... Also, disconnected the battery before replacing the timing belt. I can't do the relearn because I can't get it running long enough. Any ideas on that?

it will relearn as you drive it. how long does this run anyhow just for a few seconds? if it does try a security system reset because you disconnected battery. see link.

Hello,

It looks like there are more marks on the cam sprockets. You are looking a dot I believe. There are two lines on each one so I don't think you are on the right ones. Can you take a picture of the entire sprocket please?

Best, Ken

I'm back :( It's purring like a kitten on idle, it will run indefinitely on idle, but stalls as soon as putting in gear. Also, timing light is reading crankshaft position as off, not matching where lined up. Thoughts? Reading at about 90 degrees.

Hello,

Yep I see a dot on the gear on the right, do you see one on the left? This is the marks that should lined up I would think.

Please let us know what you find ;)

Cheers, Ken

Thanks, line up with what? I/E are at top with marks meeting in the middle. Am I supposed to do something else with the dots? For giggles I did line them up in the middle yesterday, but it wouldn't start. All other marks are off if I do that though.

I see, you are okay with the marks, I took a closer look at the diagram so the way you have it is correct. So it runs but it dies at idle or?

It runs on idle, but as soon as you give it gas or put it in gear it stalls. It's now overheating. Running very rich, spitting a lot of condensation out of the exhaust pipe, and the catalytic converter is blowing.
