Car randomly stalls. Many users on the internet diagnosed the problem as a bad PEM (fuel pump electronic module). This is a common problem for Volvo vehicles of this era.
There was a recall to relocate the PEM to the spare tire area.
I bought a new PEM and went to replace it, but I can't find the PEM:
I checked out the regular PEM locations but it's not there:
1. Passenger side top edge of gas tank.
2. Spare tire area.
3. Under the rear seat.
4. Rear passenger wheel well.
5. Beside fuel filter.

Where else would the PEM be located?
The only other place I can think of is on top of the gas tank hidden from view.
Very frustrating!
Any help would be much appreciated!

The XC70 is in Canada. Not sure if Canadian model is different.
Also, the gas tank is plastic not metal.
There is very little space around the tank, and I cannot see a PEM anywhere at the edges of the tank. Can't get a hand up the edges of the tank to see if the PEM is located at the top of the tank.
Will I have to drop the tank?

Hi,

It's on the tank (top), but you don't need to remove the tank.

If you look below, I have attached the directions. Some of these were actually near the spare tire, but others were on the tank.

Let me know if this helps or if you have questions.

Take care,

Joe

Hello,

Keep in mind that the fuel pump module is only equipped with vehicles with demand control fuel pump (according to Volvo).

When the vehicle stalls, are you able to start it back up easily or does it take time before starting again?

I have attached the fuel pump module diagrams below. Take a look at that to see if you might have overlooked anything.

Let me know of any questions.
Thank you.

Thanks for all the info, but I checked all these locations thoroughly before and again after your post - no PEM. Strange - the PEM is fairly big, where could they have put it?
When the vehicle stalls, I am able to start it back up easily most of the time, but lately it sometimes takes a bit of time before starting again.

Hi,

Are you sure the vehicle has a demand control fuel pump? If it doesn't, it won't have an electric controlled fuel pump module.

If you look at the pic below, that is the only other place the manual indicates as being located.

Let me know.

Joe

It is a 2004 XC70 with the 2.5L engine so it should have a PEM.
As far as I know only the 2001-2002 XC70's with the B5244T3 engines did not have a PEM.
How can I determine if my vehicle has a demand control fuel pump or not?

Hi,

You are correct. Just to confirm, you have a 2004 Volvo XC70 L5-2.5L Turbo VIN 59 B5254T2, correct?

IF that is the case, it should be on the top of the fuel tank. I attached a portion of the wiring schematic for this vehicle below. Take a look.

Let me know.

Joe
