My car turns over but won’t start, my wife stopped the car, turned the ignition off, then tried to start it again and it was acting like the battery was dead. Then turned it off again and back on, it turned over but will not start. What will cause this?

Hello,

This could be a problem with your vehicle's Body Control Module (BCM) or the wires going to it. In the diagrams down below I have included a description of how your vehicle's ignition system works as well as wiring diagrams of the starting circuit. I have also included a diagram of the BCM Connector and a guide on how to properly test electrical connectors. You will need to use a multi-meter to do this, so I have included this link below if you are unfamiliar with how to use one.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-use-a-voltmeter

Can you please take a voltage reading at Pin #2(White Wire) of the body control connector with a helper turning the vehicle's ignition switch to the "start" position and get back to us with what you find out.

Thanks,
Alex

I took a volt meter to the white wire on the BCM and the numbers dropped. The volt meter belongs to a friend of mine and he showed me how to use it. I want to add that I changed the fuel pump control driver module, the solenoid purge valve, and the fuel pump (in the tank), thinking at first that it was a fuel problem but none of the new parts solved the problem. I live out in a small town in Alaska so I’m kind of limited on internet and good cell service and my car is parked in my friends shop about two miles away.

Hello again,

Okay, so what was the voltage reading at Pin #2 of the connector X1 at BCM? Remember, you want a helper turning the ignition key to the "start" position when you are doing this.

Thanks,
Alex

The colored wires look like in different locations than the diagram that was sent to me, the voltage on the second pin was 0 though.

Hello again,

It's the light green connector. The white wire on the top left is the wire/pin we are testing. Please get back to us with the voltage reading.

Thanks,
Alex

Okay, I tested the right connector (light green) and white wire this time, the voltage got up to 145, I’m wondering what kind of number you’re looking for when I do this test?

Hello again,

Okay, that looks good, we were looking for battery voltage. So next let's test the Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP). In the diagrams down below I have included the factory diagnostic guide for testing the CKP and its location on the vehicle. Please go through this guide and get back to us with what you find out.

Thanks,
Alex

Hello, I have not gotten to the CKP yet, but I did get a scanner reading and I am hoping this will help trying to figure out the problem, but I will get to the sensor soon.

Hello again,

Test the wires coming out of Pin #16 (pink wire) and #47 (gray wire) of the Fuel Pump Flow Control Module to the Fuel Pump. Check the wires for opens. I have included instructions for you in the diagrams down below. If the wires check out okay, then the problem is going to be in the Fuel Pump Flow Control Module. I have included the fuel pump wiring diagrams and the instructions for the removal and installation of the Fuel Pump Flow Control Module as well as a guide for finding Open Circuits in an electrical circuit for you, also, in the diagrams down below. Please get back to us with what you are able to find out.

Thanks,
Alex

I tested the pink and grey wires of the fuel pump control module and it showed 160, I have not gotten to testing other wires yet, the fuel pump control module is new and the store(Napa) I bought it from said it didn’t have to be programmed.

Hello again,

Actually, it does. I didn't realize that the component was replaced, otherwise I would got to this sooner. In the diagrams down below I have included what the vehicle manufacturer has to say on the subject, but it looks like something that the dealer is going to have do. Please keep us informed.

Thanks,
Alex

Would it make a difference if put the old one back on the vehicle? Is there a fuel pump relay fuse in the fuse panel?

Hello again,

What was wrong with it in the first place? The Fuel Pump Flow Control Module acts as the fuel pump relay. I have included a description of it's operation in the diagrams down below for you. I have previously sent you a wiring diagram of the fuel pump system of your vehicle. It will have all the components of the fuel pump system on it. Please get back to us.

Thanks,
Alex

Hello, my apologies for not getting back to you sooner, I’m kinda stuck where I’m at with this car right now, my knowledge is limited when it comes to testing wires and figuring electrical, and I don’t have anybody to help me with it other than you on here, me and my family are moving within a week and I got stuck packing and I’m running out of time trying to find the problem with this car.

Hello again,

I understand. Why did you originally replace the Fuel Pump Flow Control Module for?

Thanks,
Alex

I thought that maybe it was the problem, but I really don’t have a clue what it could be. Did a lot of Googling and figured I’d give it a try.

Hello again,

Well it very well could be the original problem, but according to the vehicle manufacturer, the Fuel Pump Flow Control Module does need to be programmed for it to work properly. What was the original problem?

Thanks,
Alex

How do you program it? Does it have to be on the car or can I send it to a dealer or service shop and will they do it for me? The car just flat out quit like the battery died at first, now it sounds like it’s not getting fuel it needs to start. When I turn it over after sitting for a few hours it does sound like it wants to start but won’t.
