Just bought this car and after a few months she stopped running on the freeway.
My mechanic determined it was my timing belt. Had him replace that. Also threw on my valve cover gasket, fuel filter, new plugs. Ran okay for about a week then just didn't want to start. He came to my work to try and get it started one night and had me crank after and during spraying what I believe would be starter fluid and my whole air box exploded and caught on fire. I have a few questions. 1. Could that have been caused because of the starting fluid? Positive on battery not being covered? Fuel pump shut off switch. Can I use some sort of glue on it, or does it need a new box? He came back to look at it and did not know what to do. Said something about maybe the camshaft and crankshaft sensors? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

If the timing belt was loose the engine could have jumped time so when you sprayed starting fluid it ignited inside the intake causing the damage, you have described. I would recheck the timing belt marks which I have included in the images below. Also, if you can upload an image of the airbox I can help you determine if it can be repaired. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.

The mechanic checked and said the timing belt was solid but maybe he didn't want to be at fault. I will have him re check and I will upload a picture when I get off. Thanks

Yep, that came apart pretty good, I would try some epoxy to glue it back together make sure there are no holes and that the part is airtight. Also any luck with the timing belt?

Haven't spoken with him but last he said it wasn't the timing belt. It was nice and tight. Could replacing the camshaft or crankshaft be a solution to the non-starting? I've glued it back together but nervous to try to start it after last time.

All you can do is try it, also if you upload a short video of the engine cranking over, I can tell if the engine is in good shape or not.

Would you recommend permatex plastic, jb weld or goop automotive for glue to use? I was trying to get input ahead of time and am just now actually trying to get her up and running. Can I crank it for the video without the airbox crap assembled?
