I have stripped this engine down, new cylinder head gasket and rebuilt engine. I am trying to set up the timing for the engine, but everything in manual is a little vague and confusing.
When I set all timing marks in line, the valves in number four piston will touch the piston head. There is a point in manual when it says, "to avoid accidental damage to pistons or valves, you must turn the crankshaft backwards by 60 degrees". That is the last this is mentioned, it doesn't say at any point to put it forward by the same amount, and when moved backwards by 60 degrees, it puts the timing well out. I just don't understand how, 60 degrees is a large amount to be out.
The car is a diesel 1.7 turbo.

Hello,

We don't have this engine is the states, but I think we can get the timing correct using relative guides. Does this look like the correct engine? Check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find.

Thank you for your response. The engine you are showing is completely different to this one, although I am aware that you do have this engine in the states, but I cannot remember exactly on which vehicle.
I will now endeavor to find out which one, and something tells me it in one of the Chevrolet models.
Regards,
Pat

If you can get that information I can find the diagrams. I don't think they have diesel engines here for Chevrolet?

Okay, thank you again.
I heading out to Vauxhall dealer, to speak with one of the mechanics. For the most part, the job is done, just timing to get right, and there is no way I want to attempt to start it as it is, or will damage valves and pistons, and could do untold damage by retarding the engine by 60 degrees. It is a massive amount.
