1992 Cadillac Seville V8 Automatic 200000 miles

I just replace the steering column on a 1992 cadillac seville and the guy that did the work says that the new key has to be programmed. is this true or did he hook something up wrong?

some models on this vehicle did use programmable keys so it is very possible you need the new key programmed. did your original key have a black housing at the end of it?
