My car just started overheating. We took it to a mechanic that was close by where the car overheated. He said he checked the thermostat and it wasn't that. He than said that he had to replace the water pump and radiator because it wasn't doing it's job. That did not fix the problem. The car can not run more than five minutes without overheating. He now says that it is the head gasket. As I was reading your articles I noticed that he never checked the heater core or the cooling fans. The engine service light stays on and he said that has nothing to do with the radiator, water pump or head gasket and he can not check those parts with the computer.I am at my wits ends on what to do

The check engine light could be related if coolant is passing through the exhaust and has contaminated an O2 sensor. I would recommend a block test for the presence of combustion gases in the cooling system, that would confirm an internal leak.
