On my 2012 GMC Canyon 3.7L i5 when I accelerate in the truck and it gets at or above 3,000 rpm's there is a burning smell that comes through my air vents like a oil burning smell and I burn a little oil. I was told it is a bad piston ring or head gasket but I do not know. Are there any tips you have of what to put in with the oil to help repair the valves, seals, and other parts? Do you know what could be causing the smell?

Good afternoon.

There are no additives that can repair worn out parts. The failures have to be determined and repairs made to those items.

All that stuff you see for sale in the parts stores have no effect on burning or leaking oil.

I would have someone check the system for you and pinpoint the exact issue and then give you an estimate of the failed parts.

It may not be as bad as you think.

This sounds like the valve cover gaskets are leaking onto the exhaust manifold. Can you use a flashlight and check the valve cover gaskets to see if there are leaking? Here is a guide to help you see what you are in for when doing he job the car is different but the procedure is the same. Check out the diagrams below to see how the job is done on your car.

Check out the diagrams (below). Let us know what happens and please upload pictures or videos of the problem.

Cheers, Ken
