Got my car back today after having the timing
chains, tensioners, and guides replaced. My car
started burning oil on the way home. Lots of smoke
and stink from the tailpipe. Took it back, and the
mechanic said that the oil pressure was raised from
the increased performance due to the new timing
chains, exposing a bad rings problem that was already
there. Sound plausible? I don't buy it. I burned 2 qts
of oil today. Before I going through a qt about every
1200-1500 miles. Couldn't have raised the oil pressure
that much. Thoughts? TIA

It ma little bit but nothing to make it burn oil. Try replacing your pcv valve and make sure hose isnt' soft. It could be valve seals going bad or more oil hung up in valve area from repair. Keep an eye on it as mechanic doesn't seem to want to fix whatever it is. It also could be drain holes plugged in cyl head. If it continues take it back but give it a few days.

Thanks so much for the reply, Hmac.
I had asked the mechanic if he had checked the pcv valve, and he said he had. We couldn't figure out what it could be, and decided it had to be the rings, given how much oil it was burning. I was about to go through with the ring job when he decided to check the pcv valve again. Guess what? That was it! Running fine now. You the man, Hmac!
