Noises problem
1996 Buick Riviera 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive 112000 miles

The car was running fine on the freeway. When I went to slow down for a off ramp, I noticed the car was wanting to die. Stopping at the "Stop" sign the car was idling rough, and there was a metallic noise. If I gave it gas, and bumped up the RPM, it smoothed out (a Little). Hobbled home and took off the SC belt. Still noise, took off accessory belt (only for second or two) started car. Still noise. Sounds like two spoons in a blender. The noise is kind of surround sound but seems to be coming from the harmonic balancer/front cover area. The harmonic balancer did not seem to have any play, but, I may check again. Soooo, the question, anyone done the chain/waterpump thing or how much $$ to have someone do it. Trying to find a repair manual for the 95-99 Riviera is tough.

I would look real close at the harmonic balancer. These are known for seperating at the rubber mount in between them and sounds just like a engine knock. Usually with the belt on you can try turning the alt pulley forward and back and if it moves even a little bit then the harmonic balancer is no good
