If your maf fails, then your computer won't be able to tell the fuel injectors how much fuel to spray into the motor.
So the computer should set a code and try to compensate by going into "Limp mode". This is a low-power mode that's meant to allow you to continue driving until you can get it to a shop.
It won't affect how you transmission shifts, but it will be drastically down on power.
But if you MAF is really at fault, then it will definitely set a code in your computer. If there's no code, then it isn't that sensor.
