Brakes problem
1999 Buick Lesabre 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive 150000 miles

left rear wheel locks up when brake pedal is pushed -- pulled brake drum -- shoes, springs, and drum appear normal -- brake releases when pedal is released -- no apparent problem with right rear brakes -- ABS?

Hi there,

the first thing I would test is to see if there is any residual brake pressure in the line when the brakes lock up, crack the bleeder and see if this release the brakes, if not it will be a mechanical problem, try this first.

No residual pressure -- wheels are running free when off the brake pedal

Is there any sign of any contaminant on the linings? Old or new?

Make sure that the brakes are dust free, lube all linkages and backing plate rubbing pads, ensure that the adjustment is correct and the hand brake is not over tight, also ensure that the tyre on that wheel is not bald and just loosing grip and causing the brake to lock up.

Sorry. I misled you -- accidentally. I live on a working farm. We do all our own machinery repair and maint. I worked my way thru college as a foreign car mechanic. My youngest brother is one of the best diesel and heavy equipment mechanics I've ever met. We have already tried all the easy stuff. We are guessing that there is a problem with the ABS. We found an unidentifiable piece of linkage on the left A-frame, just behind the left brake backing plate. It is attached to a box with four brake lines. We hit all the car parts places and small garages open today. No one knew what it was -- or did. No one can tell us about the ABS on this car. Can you help?
