So what is the little bypass procedure for this "little" problem?

Remove hush panel under steering column and locate the orange harness that goes up the steering column. You can unplug it and use a ohm meter across the 2 terminals with the key in ignition you should be able to read the resistance of the key. To check resistance of key measure across the pellet in the middle of the key. If the resistance is not the same at the plug on the orange harness, than the wire is probably broken. Go to your local radio shack and ask for a resistor the same value as your key and splice it across the 2 little white wires inside orange harness. Put the resistor on the vehicle side of harness not the part that goes up the column.
