Car Stuttering bad

My 92 Buick century, 60k miles V6 is stuttering really bad. This usually happens when we first start driving. After about 10 minutes of driving the stuttering stops. Pick up time in this car in terrible. Sometimes the car will not switch into second gear till about 40 mph. Is there something I can check that might be causing this. The engine light has flickered once or twice, but nothing constant. Last year I had the fuel pump and filter changed in the car. I would appreciate any help with this. Thanks.
