Heater not working

I can turn my car on and leave it running for 20 minutes and it will not blow hot air out of the heater vents until I am physically pushing the accelerator. The heater will blow cold air until I do so. When driving, it works the same. If I lift my foot off of the accelerator the air will turn cold (like when coming to a stop) but as soon as I press the accelerator again it blows the hot air again. Now that it is getting cold the only way to defrost the windshield is to sit in the car and push the accelerator down until the windshield is clean. HELP!

Hi:

It sounds like you're low on coolant or the water pump is going out but to be sure here is a guide to help us fix the problem.
