Was driving the car all day, all of a sudden car starts to idle rough. Stop at a light, when light turns green, car stalls. Able to start again but when shift into drive it stalls again. Start again in park, but as soon as it goes into drive, stalls again every time.

Left car over night, and of course, it started fine and runs normally. Hasn't stalled again when in drive. Slightly not confident of not getting stuck again.

Any suggestions to head this off before it happens again?

OK so tell me did it run fine in park or neutral when it would stall? In other words did it stall only when put into gear? If so it may have been that the torque converter may have been locked up and wouldn't unlock. Thats my best guess without it have the problem anymore.

Thanks for your reply.

The Buick was idling fine in Park and Neutral. Yes it would only stall whwn shifted into drive. This is the first and only time it has done this. I stay local with it in case it happens again.

Can I be pro active and replace the potential source of the problem?

Ok it sounds like that maybe the lockup solinoid may have been sticking. So my next question is how does the trany fluid look? Use the chart below and let me know what color it is.
