Brakes drag after driving for a length of time but when I loosen the master cylinder nuts it allows me to drive home.

How could the brake booster push rod all of a sudden increase in length?

Hi,

Was the master cylinder recently replaced or was any brake work done? Based on your description, something in the MC isn't releasing which likely has the brakes applied lightly at all times. The more you drive it, the hotter they get causing brake fluid to expand and apply harder and harder as the fluid gets hotter.

Do me a favor. Lift one wheel at a time with the vehicle cold and see if there is an excessive drag on any of the wheels. If there isn't, drive it a bit and check again. See if the heat is causing them to apply.

Also, let me know if any brake work has recently been done.

Take care,

Joe

The Master Cylinder hasn't been replaced in a few years. And what you're saying makes sense about the heat thing. The first time it happened the right rear started to drag or lock up and by loosening the Master Cylinder bolts it worked to lessen the drag. Thinking it was the right rear caliper I replaced it and then tightened the Master Cylinder bolts again and it worked for a while and then it happened again, and I had to pull over. After loosening the Master Cylinder bolts again, I drove home. Question the Master Cylinder bolts are loose now, and the brakes work fine. Can I drive it this way until I replace the master cylinder? The Booster for this car is back ordered bigtime but Master Cylinder is available.

Ron,

Great old car. As far as the Master Cylinder, are you sure that is the issue? I'm questioning if you have a caliper hanging up. Did you ever notice excessive heat from any of the wheels?

Joe,

I rebuilt the front calipers a year or so ago and as I said before replaced the rear right caliper a month ago when it locked up. Yes of course the wheels heated up. The first time it happened it was in the right rear and this last time was front right. I felt all the wheels and the last time the front left was heated but the front right was really hot. It can't be a caliper problem. It's either Master Cylinder which I ordered because it's available and hope that is the cure. If not, I'm going to have to wait until the booster becomes available. My question is, is there a problem running it with the Master Cylinder bolts loosened in the meantime?

Hi,

If it was me, I would likely not drive it like that. With my luck, something would jamb or become out of alignment and cause brake failure.

Let me know if the new Master Cylinder takes care of the issue. I'm really interested in knowing. In my mind, I just see the Master Cylinder hanging up like this. However, you have owned the vehicle a long time, so you are familiar with it.

Let me know,

Joe

Joe, first let me say I am and have enjoyed this exchange. Thank you for that.
Secondly, I have access to a Classic Fiat 124 guru. Mark Allison at Allisonsautomotive. Com, who has been working on these classics for years now and is the go-to guy for these cars. Mark told me just now in his email response to adjust the booster pushrod which I'm going to do this weekend.
But to do that I have to disconnect the Master Cylinder from its line in order to get it out of the way, which will take some time. I play in golf games on Wednesday and Thursday and will drive it like it is and be very careful not to follow too close and keep my right hand free to grab the emergency brake if need to. LOL
I will let you know after I adjust the pushrod this weekend how that is going.
Again, thank you for the exchange.
P.S. My other daily driver is a 36-Ford truck that I have a 292 cu in Yblock in and is in the middle of brain surgery. Blown head gasket and number 8 piston blew the rings off and came partially apart. (Probably detonation) The ring and piston pieces were in the oil pan and when I popped this piston the cylinder wall was remarkedly unscathed (smooth as a baby's butt) so luckily, I think I'll get away with honing it and dropping a new piston in it. The problem is finding a single piston set of rings, so I don't have to cough up several hundreds of dollars buying a whole set.
I also have two Ford 9N tractors that I love and use regularly.
Lastly friends of mine who know me well just say it's another RonTron when one of my rigs goes south. There is always some strange thing that happens to RonTron cars and tractors, LOL.

Hi,

That makes sense. If it is placing a drag, then what I mentioned originally is likely happening. But like you, I questioned how the pushrod would suddenly increase in length.

Regardless, if you have a chance, let me know how things turn out for you. Also, I think the Ford would be easier to work on. LOL It sounds like this is a hobby you enjoy which is excellent. Wish you were my neighbor. LOL

Take care and I hope to hear from you.

Joe, just thought I would give you an update.
I put spacers between the booster and the Master Cylinder and haven't had any issues in the last couple of weeks. The spacers are only a couple bolt washers thick. Doesn't take much apparently to take the load of the Booster. I'll let you know if things change.

Tom,

I appreciate you getting back to me. Did you ever determine what caused the need for spacers? I'm just curious. LOL

Let me know if you can. Otherwise, please feel free to come back anytime in the future if you have questions. It was nice working with you.

Take care,

Joe

Joe. Have no idea about why the booster plunger suddenly got longer but the spacers are still working. By the by go to YouTube and search Ron Troncatty. I’m an actor who can’t get arrested anymore but worked a lot in my younger days.

I watched the videos. That is a cool concept! I wish you luck!

The booster still has me confused. I never saw one grow. LOL

Take care,

Joe
