I am going to be replacing my rear brake pads. How do I reset brake service on iDrive and is it necessary to replace brake rotors as well? No visible scoring and I do not have a dial indicator to check runout. Thank you.

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros. Com. Lets start with an extensive reset for the condition based service (CBS). This is an extensive reset, but here are the directions specific to your vehicle. I have attached several pictures to help you locate the items mentioned. Note: This process includes all CBS resets.

CBS inspections or emissions tests can be reset or entered in the Control Display in the vehicle. Generally it is recommended that the CBS items are reset using the diagnosis system (see "CBS Reset with Diagnosis System" please refer to: See: Resetting CBS With the Diagnosis System).

Important:
Before resetting in the instrument cluster, check with the tester that the vehicle's internal days counter is correct. Please refer to: See: CBS Vehicle Data Correction With the Diagnosis System

Observe the following process for resetting:

When a Service Maintenance is required, a Service Maintenance icon will appear shortly after the ignition has been switched on.
Resetting the Service Items

Note: Close all doors and windows, be sure that transmission is in P-Park.

Put key in ignition.

Without pressing the brake pedal and clutch pedal (if equipped). Quickly switch on the ignition/terminal 15. Allow the instrument cluster lights to cycle and complete initiation and warning beep stops. The accessory mode, radio and heater should/will have function.

Note: If instrument cluster lights did not cycle as stated in step 2, reset procedure must be restarted beginning from Step 1.

Press and hold brake pedal. Press the trip odometer button (located just below speedometer on left side of instrument cluster) (-red arrow- ) until you briefly see the warning triangle appear in the display between the speedometer and tachometer. Continue to hold the trip odometer button until a service symbol appears. When a service symbol appears, immediately release the trip odometer button.
WARNING!
Holding the trip odometer button for longer than 10 seconds will result with a sequence of CAN BUS information and the procedure will need to be restarted.

Note: Please restart the procedure beginning at Step 1, if information other than service items appears while holding the trip odometer button for longer than 10 seconds.

After releasing the trip odometer button, the service mode screen will appear. Use the toggle/scroll switch (-arrow 1- ) located on the Turn Signal Lever to display the desired Service Symbol/Item to be reset.
Note: CBS items are arranged chronologically according to remaining distance or remaining time. The most critical item is generally displayed first.

Select the service item to be reset. Press the "BC " button (-red arrow- ) for approximately 3-5 seconds until "Reset " appears.

Release the "BC " button (-red arrow -). Confirm the reset by repressing the "BC " and holding 3 seconds or until the display shows the time clock.

Immediately release the "BC " button after screen returns to service screen.
If another service item is to be reset, use the toggle/scroll switch to select item and repeat step 6 -8.
After the desired service symbols/items have been reset. Press the brake pedal and hold. Remove the key/remote control from the ignition lock and release brake pedal.
Re-insert the key/remote control.
Press the Start Stop Button and recheck display/work.
NOTE:
The remaining time/distance is given after each maintenance operation.
The reset process is cancelled by waiting for too long or by replacing the terminals.
The list of operations is sorted according to remaining distance or remaining time.
CBS items are arranged chronologically. The most critical item is displayed first.
Every reset causes the service counter of the respective item to be increased by one. The service counters are used in the item-specific SAM to monitor. The service counter can only be read off with the "Correct Vehicle Data " menu of the tester. Please refer to: See: CBS Vehicle Data Correction With the Diagnosis System.
A "! " symbol at the end of the operation indicates that the operation is due, and a "o " symbol indicates a reset inhibition.
If the Button is pressed and held, a prompt will appear in the rev counter, in which the operation to be reset again has to be confirmed by briefly pressing the button. The operation is reset by setting the availability to 100%.
Important:
It is only possible to carry out a reset in the vehicle if the service life of the item is below 80% ; if however it is necessary to carry out a reset, this must be done in the diagnosis system (see "CBS reset with the diagnosis system" please refer to: See: Resetting CBS With the Diagnosis System). The reset lock is displayed in the menu with the text "O.K. ".
The values should only ever be reset after the service measure has been carried out.
Every time CBS items are reset, it must be ensured that the on-board date is set correctly. The on-board date is reference for defining the target date for the time-dependent CBS items.
If the on-board date needs to be corrected, the service order must be checked again.
It is not possible to reset the CBS operation "Front or Rear Brakes " if the DSC control unit detects a worn sensor. It is only possible to reset the front and rear brake pad displays if the brake pad sensor is working.
Correction of the legally stipulated values is carried or in the Control Display.
Entering the legally stipulated deadlines (-vehicles/-emissions).
Enter the target deadline for the legally stipulated deadline by clicking on the item with the Controller in the CBS menu of the Control Display under:

Start menu => Information => Next Service => Status

The target month or target year can be set and confirmed by rotating and pressing the Controller.
As far as the brake rotors, I am not sure where you live. In Pennsylvania, they must be measured with a micrometer to determine thickness is within the manufacturer's specs. Additionally, no scratches deeper than.0015" is legal. As far as runout, if you do not feel a pulsation when braking, chances are they are good.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have additional questions.
Cheers,
Joe
