I can be driving an the brakes are fine next time go to use them nothing happens local garage have said it is two brakes working an not all four. They have cleaned them all and advised changing brake disks, but said it is fine to drive. Surely all four brakes should work all the time.

You need to describe the symptoms differently. "Nothing happens" can mean a dozen different things. The brake pedal will not move. The brake pedal goes all the way to the floor and the car keeps moving. The brake pedal feels normal but the car does not slow down.

It sounds like a major fluid leak to me or a at least a master cylinder failure.

Yup. Pedal going to the floor is not normal. Are you losing brake fluid from the reservoir?
