The car will shut off when you come to a stop at a light or stop sign. It will crank back up with no problem and only happens when decelerating. Replaced camshaft sensors, but a mechanic said I need to replace both front catalytic converters. I was thinking maybe crankshaft sensor?

Hi,

If the converters are plugged, that can cause it. However, you would likely notice a power loss. Is that the case? Has the mechanic indicated any diagnostic trouble codes that are related to the catalytic converter?

If you think it could be the converters, the easiest thing to do is remove a pre cat oxygen sensor to see if that changes the issue. When removed, it allows an exit for the exhaust which is usually enough to notice a difference.

Here is a link that explains how to test a converter. Also, I'm attaching a link that explains the common symptoms of a failing converter. Let me know if anything mirrors what is indicated.

Let me know. Also, if there are codes, let me know what they are.

Take care,
Joe

Hi, just jumping in to give some advise as well. A quick way to check for a restriction in the exhaust is using a scan tool with live data to monitor. You will need to look at the intake temperature sensor data.

While cruising at around 40 MPH hit the accelerator pedal down to make your vehicle go wide open throttle. If the intake temperature sensor drops down a couple of degrees there is no restriction. If the temperature goes up a couple of degrees then there is a problem where you could have a restriction like a plugged up catalytic converter.

If it looks like there is no restriction then I would suspect a dirty throttle body and I would recommend you clean it. Here is a link on how to service the throttle body:

Let us know if this resolved your issue.

Hi,

The code indicates a cylinder 1 misfire. Two things. First, that will cause a power loss and drivability issues. Second, if it has been that way for an extended time, it can damage the catalytic converter.

Has the misfire been repaired?

Let us know.

Joe
