Lights on dash on when key is out of ignition

When I switch off the ignition and remove the key in my '01 X5 the lights on the dash and the radio remain on even when the key is out of the ignition. The only way I can get it off is to disconnect the battery and then connect it again. This happens once in awhile. What could be causing this to happen?

This can be alot, but I have seen many ignition switch failures, (open in ignition circuit ) causing power to the cluster which powers the radio and other things, it would be best to have the codes checked by the dealer, the scanner they use is very dependable and specific and pinpoints problems right down to the actual failed part
