Transmission stuck in second?

My BMW 540i will not shift into any gear but second. When the car starts and is put in drive, the car will not budge, but when I push the throttle to 3,000RPM, it shifts from park, but to first. It seems to be stuck in a single gear, I believe it to be second, no matter what its set to (D, 2, 3, 4) but it will go into park and reverse alright. The check engine light is on. All of the fluids are good, and runs fine besides the transmission problem.

Regardless of the problem with your 540, you will need to find a way to extract the fault codes and repost to me so that I can assist you.

Yep, codes do help but I can tell you if the turbine shaft speed sensor goes out it will cause this problem, here is how to get the codes.

Here is how to change out the sensor. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.
