I am about to change the oil on this car for the first time myself. After getting over the shock of the price of synthetic oil, I'm ready to move forward. Is there anything special about changing the oil on a Bimmer, other than the type of oil and resetting the service indicator afterwards (eg, is the oil filter or plug extra hard to get to)?

There is nothing special about it mate. The oil filter is at the front of the motor, just under the 36mm hex top black cap, and the drain plug is a 17mm hex at the pan. Pull the filter first to let all the oil in it drain into the pan. Pull the drain plug, be sure to use the new crush washer when reassembling. Install the drain plug and torque it to 25 ft. lbs. Pour in 7 quarts of oil and install the filter. That should do it.
