Bmw 528e 1988 260K 6 cyl engine size na

I could use the firing order of the plugs/distributor. I was replacing the plug wires and thought I was careful, one at a time, but since replacement the engine runs even rougher--idles but will pop on revving up. So a mechanical minded friend will come over to help but can you help me with firing order, how to confirm cylinder number, distirubuter terminal number, etc. I can't afford a chilton's manual.

Can any of these be factors? I applied dielectric grease on wire terminals. I have not yet routed the wires into the plastic keeper that keeps the wires safe from the engine. One of the wires (I'm not 100% sure which!) Was routed thru a circular "sensor?" Of some sort which is connected by a thinner wire to somewhere near the intake manifold-I haven't routed the appropriate, or any, plug wire thru that sensor.

I'm afraid I haven't worked on cars since the 1970s, can these "newer" cars be that touchy?

Thanks so much :|

Hi there,

The engine cylinders are numbered 1at the front through to 6 at the rear, the firing order is 1, 5, 3, 6, 2, 4. No 1 terminal on the distributoe should be looking from the front of the engine, the terminal at the left of the distributor cap hold down clip that is closest to the engine, and the direction of rotation is clockwise. The coil lead is the centre lead, From memory the sensor is No 1 cyl pick up for the diognostics,
I hope that this helps.
