If there is little to no air suddenly coming from the vents when A/C is on, is it likely the resistor or the motor? I understand that there could be a huge diffence in the cost of the repair depending on the problem. Someone told me that if no air is coming out at all, it is likely the motor. Also was told that if air is coming out full blast without being able to control it would mean that it is the resistor. Is the replacement of either part something that I need to take to the dealer? I appreciate your help on this.

The failure as you describe it seems likely to be the final stage and not the blower motor itself. The part number is 64-11-8-385-549 and can be installed by almost any competent technician or layperson if that person has reasonable skill sets pertaining to automotive repair, if in doubt I would seek out your friendly local neighborhood BMW technician. You can expect to pay for about one hour of the technicians time for this repair, the actual time for the replacement of the part is approx. 1/2 hour.
