Transmission problem
1988 BMW 325 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

Hi-
I've got a 1988 325 that I put together from a basket case. When I got it back together there was no reverse in the manual transmission. It acts like something is blocking it/won't allow it to go into gear. I assume it is worn out linkage but I could have put it in wrong(tranny was not apart) How can I tell before I take the tranny out? Thanks, skonk.

The linkage could be the problem, or maybe you have a transmission with a bent shift fork or?

Try looking at the back of the shift linkage underneath the car. It's supposed to be supported by a bracket mounted to the top of the tunnel. I think that if you missed the bracket when you installed the transmission, the back of the linkage will move and not let you twist the shift rod far enough to get it into reverse.

Good Luck

Prolly dumb of me to say but I know some people have the problem of finding reverse in European cars not all of them but some of them have reverse located to the left and up of 1st gear instead of usual shift pattern.
