Electrical problem
2001 BMW 318 Two Wheel Drive Manual 100000 miles

i have a bmw 318 compact 2001 model e46. The problem I have is that the car will run for a while then cut out dead and will then have to be left for an 2 hours before it will restart. Ive broken down 4 times each recovery mechanic hes given me an explanation.
first it was the alarm imobliser then no fuel then fuel pump and now ecu. A local garage to me has had my car 10 weeks they think its the ecu but dont want 2 buy a new one incase it isnt lol. The car has been put on diagnostics but the fault couldent be found as the car was running at the time. The local garage have even just sent the car 2 bmw who now cant sort the problem as they are saying the engine is makeing a noise and they will not look at it untill its fixed. What am I supposed to do now any help would be great thanks chris

Chris, trying to diagnose a noise from cyberspace is next to impossible, can you tell me what the BMW dealer told you exactly?

Hi basicaly my bmw keeps breaking down it just cuts out dead and will only restart 2 hours later, its happend 3 times ive been told it could be the anti theft then the fuel pump or fuel pump relay and now the ecu. The garage that was dealing with it had my car 4 10 weeks and they wernt 100% sure if it was the ecu. The garage have since sent my car 2 bmw who cant find the fault because the car was running they can only find the ecu fault if the car is broken down and basicaly they wont drive it around because of a little bit of a rattle in the top end. I really dont no what to do with the car

So lets sum it up, there is an ECM or in this case a DME issue, the dealer is saying there is no way they can be held accountable due to the internal engine noise, and you are unsure of what to do, is that about it?
