1997 BMW 318 gets hot at idol

i can drive it for hours and it wont get hot but if it sets at an idol for 5 to 10 minutes it starts to get hot. then i rev the engine or drive it and the temp go right back down. help going crazy.

Replace the thermostat and make sure your coolant level is correct and the cooling fan is coming on.

thermosatat was replaced befor i replaced head gasket do you think it still might be bad.

Take it back out and test it Or leave it out and see what happens this will tell you something at idle on that time frame- How old is the radiator cap?

Is there a fan and a fan clutch driven off the water pump? If not replace them with part# 11-52-1-723-918 & 11-52-1-723-363

the thermostat and where the hoses connect is all one piece i do have an old one. will that make it run cooler or hotter.
