I had a flat tire a bit back and finally got it fixed. When I went to start the vehicle, it had no crank, and it wouldn’t even slightly turn on. We boosted it off and it did start but after it ran for a good 10-15 minutes while in park, I could tell it was starting to want to shut off. I watched at the voltage on my dashboard, and it would drop to 10 voltages when it’s a 12.9 voltage battery, it didn’t shut off and I was able to drive it to my house. I got a brand-new alternator last year and a brand-new battery last year. When I would go to start the vehicle, it would crank but it would take a second for it to actually start. I drove it home and had no problems, the voltage even stayed 12-13 while driving. However, I tried to start it that night and it was not working again. Nothing would happen, and it’s been sitting there since. While driving it’ll stay fine and act normal and even go to 12-13 voltage but when it’s in park if it’s left running it’ll start to sound like it wants to shut down and the voltage will even start to drop.

Hi,

It sounds like the alternator is failing again. When the engine is running, it should be producing approx. 14V.

Here is what I need you to do. It will require the engine to be running, but it is a simple test. You will need either a voltmeter or a multimeter.

Follow the directions in this link and let me know the results:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-a-car-alternator

Let me know. If the alternator tests good, then we need to first confirm the battery terminals are clean and tight, and free of corrosion. If they are, remove the battery and charge it. Then. have it load tested at a parts store. They should do it at no charge.

Let me know what you find.

Joe

Hello! So, I’m very busy normally so my dad tried to handle these things for me, but he works on all of our cars and normally gets it right, lol. Yesterday he tested my battery to make sure it wasn’t that. I was under the impression that we replaced the battery last year. It was completely drained, lol. The battery had almost no voltage and to beat it all... It was manufactured in 2017 so there’s no way I got a new one last year. It was very old. We went to an auto parts store and replaced it with a new battery and so far, so good! It starts up now no problem and stays 14.5-14.6 voltage and I think it’s a 15 V battery? I’m not car savvy so I very well could have that wrong! I’m taking it out in a few to get some things from the store so I shall update you. I was driving a 1999 cord Taurus with no air at all and it’s been very hot lately. My poor littles have been tortured with no air. Very excited to have good air back. :(

Hi,

That is a simple mistake. However, an easy fix. I'm glad to know it's running, and you have A/C. It's been hot and humid here as well.

As far as the battery is concerned, it is a 12v battery. When the engine is running, the alternator will produce approximately 14.5, so that sounds perfect.

Regardless, take care of yourself, keep cool, and feel free to come back anytime in the future. You are always welcome here.

Joe
