A friend had a small fender binder, scuffed the fender onto a truck bumper which caused the wheel to bend, broke the caliper line, knuckle, axle came apart from inside boot and bent the stabilizer link. Changed all parts and all looked good. Upon putting the car in drive while wheel still on stands there was a whine noise and a bit of grind while putting it into drive, let the wheel turn but I doubt it did, then turned car off and found inside boot grease all over. I am thinking either I tightened the axle volt too much or didn't insert the axle all the way in from the inside side. What is the torque on axle bolt from rotor side? When I inserted the axle I hammered it from the outside side where the nut goes in, not sure if that could cause any damage to the inside boot, which I doubt as I installed several axles before.

Hi,

I attached the torque specs below. When you say you saw grease, is it from the CV joints? Also, if you hammer the axle hard enough, it will damage the joints.

Take a look through the directions below. Let me know if that helps.

Take care,

Joe

Yes, it's from the inner CV joint. Seems like the inner part of the CV joint was moving I guess but the outer wasn't so it twisted, could also be a crappy aftermarket one. Well, how else can I install it if I don't hammer it? I didn't notice a concave washer like they say here but ill double check. I ordered another one.

Hi,

In most cases, I will give it a few good pushes on until I can feel it lock in place. If you have to tap it on, don't be overly aggressive and I would use something like a dead blow hammer that has a rubber coating on it to prevent damage to the threads.

If there is a place to use a couple of prybars and pry it into place, that is another option.

Let me know.

Joe

Thanks. How would you torque it? Have someone hold the brake pedal while you turn with the torque ratchet?

Install the caliper mount only to the steering knuckle. Place a strong screwdriver or something similar between the cooling fins (between the inner and outer rotor plates) and allow the screwdriver to rest against the caliper mount.

That will prevent it from turning so you can torque the axle nut before reinstalling everything.

Let me know how things work out for you or if you have other questions.

Take care,

joe
