Automatic trans Not moving while in gear/ grinding noise

Just purchase this car thinking it needed a new transmission but then told may be another problem. Car turned on and doesn't make any noise while in park then When shifting into any gear the car will not move and makes a grinding noise even when I put back into park.have Ti shut car off and restart for noise to stop

have a trans guy check it it may be a bad converter or pump

that would be the torque converter that is with 99.7% of all automatic trans missions.
