After an over heating issue which seemed minor, and was quickly corrected; the trans went into what the owners manual described as "Fail safe mode" (when you shift to "D", it acts like it is in "L4", and will not go into 5th gear). Other then that, it acts just fine. I usually perform my own repairs, and feel I'm pretty good at it (per the high mileage). I am at least 100 miles from the nearest dealer. What should I do? What are the likely consequences if I continue to drive it?

A trick that will sometimes reset the trans back into normal mode (out of failsafe or "limp mode"). With the car off, and in park; turn the key switch on, & off, in rapid succession (about one second in each position) three times, & start the engine on the fourth. Worked for me !
