I noticed a metallic clunking sound from the front when I brake, especially the right side. Got the car up yesterday, looked over the suspension and engine mounts and all seem OK.
But when rotating the wheels (car on jacks stands off the ground), the left wheel makes a clunking sound on every second or third rotation as if the brake pads are lose.
When rotating both front wheels and applying the brakes, both stop with a sharp click sound.
When driven earlier yesterday, car stopped quickly and in a straight line. Braking did not seem to be affected. But obviously the sound is not right.
Car is a replica Cobra. Sierra brakes in the front.
Recommendations? Thanks.

Sounds like possible steering knuckle damage or the caliper slide rails and pins are not properly tightened up, sometimes rust stops it from turning and ggives proper torque but its not all the way tight.

Hi,
Found the problem but do not know what to do about it. The car has Sierra calipers (Sierra racing), and the pads are able to move just a little out and in -(in addition to moving sideways onto the rotor) - up against a cotter pin - and that makes the clunking sound. Are the pads supposed to be able to move this way or is it a sign of wear or has something fallen off?
Thanks.

Does the caliper move or stay tight? Just the pads that are moving?

You may need new antirattle shims and regrease and torque the brakes up nicely after looking for abnormal wear first! Make sure antirattle clips are in place if equipped.
