The instrument cluster, the climate control display and the fuel information center display are all "black" All the single led on the dashboard work. Anywhere there are seven segment LED displays they are "black"

Tried replacing Instrument Cluster and BCM. Checked fuses under the dash and under the hood. I haven't found any fuses in the trunk as some information indicates.

What makes me think it wasn't fuses is that when I would turn the ignition switch on I would get a very faded display on the speedometer (this is the digital speedometer, not the analog one), for a few seconds then scramble, then go "black". Which makes me think it is a voltage problem or a module loading down the voltages for all three displays. A fuse wouldn't act that way, but it doesn't mean it didn't blow a fuse along with the original problem. Then all seven segments went totally black and wont come on at all.

I replaced the BCM and the original problem indicated with the seven segment displays coming on barely then fading to black. Now once again I have nothing. I also tried unplugging the heater/AC control module under the BCM, in case it was bad and loading everything down but no change.

I am a 40+ year digital electronic tech but not an automotive one. I find the schematics less than adequate and scattered all over the place. It looks like the Climate Control module gets +5 and +12 volts. The instrument cluster schematic indicates a +5 volt input, and the fuel info center's schematic, I can't find.

I am going to check voltages tomorrow but I need to know the following:
Is +5 and +12 VDC the only voltages involved?
Is there another fuse panel feeding these voltages to the dash in the trunk somewhere?
Is there another module I don't know about which could be taking out all three displays?
Is the BCM and the ECM the same thing, and if not where is the ECM? I keep seeing this referred to both ways.

Thanks

Good morning,

Did you use a new BCM? That is a must.

As far as the other issues, the programmer sends information to the ECM and the cluster

Good chance the programmer would be the failure as I have seen this issue many times with the old Cadiliac.

The programmer is behind the glove box and has the rod that comes out the top that moves the mode door.

Service of the PCM should normally consist of either replacement of the PCM or a MEM-CAL change. If the diagnostic procedures call for the PCM to be replaced, the Memory-Calibration unit (MEM-CAL) and PCM should be checked first to see if they are the correct parts. Also, perform the PCM Replacement Check, CHART C-1, before replacing the PCM to assure that the replacement PCM will not be damaged.

When replacing a production PCM with a service PCM, transfer the broadcast code and production number from the production unit to the service unit. Also, during replacement, the PROM, and the MEM-CAL must be removed from the PCM being replaced and transferred to the new unit.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Then disconnect two computer electrical connectors.
3. Remove computer mounting hardware.
4. Remove computer from passenger compartment.
5. Reverse procedure to install.

Thanks so much. No, I replaced the BCM with a used one then back again to original. Sounds like I am going to need an experienced service tech on this as it isn't plug and play so to speak, and replacing these parts with new ones then finding out that wasn't the problem, and not having the test programmer etc, would be cost prohibitive and probably drive me totally insane.

Is this a dealer job, God forbid? I will run some voltage checks with the excellent diagram you sent.

The terminology is all different with this. To me PCM means Pulse Coded Modulation. No wonder I am confused. I suppose in this case that is where the Proms are.

Thanks again. If you can recommend someone in Louisville, KY area or at least in this region. Cinti, Evansville, Indy etc. I would greatly appreciate it.

I have used new BCMs and have solved this issue.

I am from central PA. Sorry, no connections in your area.
