When replacing four wheels because the tread is low, why is it alignment necessary? What problems occur if the alignment is skipped?

You only need a alignment if the car is out of alignment. If it's out of alignment and you get new tire's and don't have it aligned the tire's will wear out unevenly and prematurely.
