Stereo unit powers on but no sound

Hi, the stereo with the integral cassette and remote CD, after it was unused for four weeks or so I now get an issue with the player. When powered on the controls freeze and there is no sound. The sound sometimes suddenly comes on to about half power in increments (itself without me touching the volume). Then in the same fashion it decreases the sound to zero then freezes again. Any thoughts?
