I have to push down the shift lock release button to shift my car out of park. My main question is, do I still need to depress the brake pedal while pushing the button or is the brake pedal not neccessary while pushing that button? I have been told I need to replace the whole shift assembly.

That is the interlock system and when depressing the overriding button, you need not depress the brakes but if engine is running, you need to depress the brakes to keep vehicle stationary when engaging gears.

Did you check if the brake lights are working?
Has the interlock solenoid been checked/tested?
