what would it cost approx. to get cv joints replaced? our car sounds like an airplane at highway speeds.

As long as you're going to replace the half shafts, replace the wheel bearing that is making the noise too.
We don't get involved with costs here because there's way too many variables. Any repair shop can give you an estimate for the work you want done but it's best to let them diagnose the problem first so they do the right work.
